BIM for Existing Buildings

Presenters:

Jason Ross, AIA, LEED AP and registered architect

Nathan Schwab, LEED AP and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning from Wright State Universit

Abstract:

Building Information Modeling is set to revolutionize facility management and many owners have started requiring BIM on new construction projects to take advantage of this.  But what about existing building stock - which can be as much as several million square feet?  How can owners get started with, not to mention afford, such an enormous endeavor?

This presentation will highlight a case study for getting existing building stock - 8 million square feet of differing building types, spread over multiple campuses both urban and rural - into a BIM format.  It will address how owners can get started with BIM for facility management at a basic level and with minimal financial investment.  Starting small will allow facilities to get comfortable with BIM and get personnel prepared to work with a new software package.

Topics to be discussed:

1.       Dealing with multiple locations, different plan room management styles, and varying levels of excitement/understanding of this new technology.

2.       FM processes which can be done directly from BIM software

3.       Using models for future construction projects

We suspended the webinar's for the past few months so we could switch over to a new webinar hosting company.
Our previous provider was being donated by one of the member schools and they were no longer able to continue
to providing that service to us. I Happy to say that the CFTA is now providing the service and will now be able to host
webinar's for a larger amount of participants and have higher quality recordings.
Sorry for the inconvenience but we are now back on track!

University of Washington's GIS Interior Space Mapping (Part 1)

An overview of the University of Washington's interior
space mapping system including covering more than 20 million gross
square feet in 1,500+ CAD floorplans. The UW has developed a custom
integration process between the CAD floorplans and GIS which has enabled
the utilization of GIS for interior space mapping at a large scale. The
GIS floorplan infrastructure can be used for and building/floor based
information and assets. Combining the GIS floorplan infrastructure with
out of the box tools from ESRI and specialized data integration
processes, any space based data can be easily "GIS-enabled" while
maintaining existing data management systems.

Drawing/Document Management in the Campus Facilities Environment…What works and what does not work!

Presenter: Glenn Seehausen, CEO of ACAD-Plus

 Glenn Seehausen

The Delphi Group conducted a recent study for Facility managers and published the following findings:

Facility employees spend 30% of their time handling and locating paper based information

Only 12% of information in any organization is in an accessible knowledge repository or database

An average of 9 paper copies are made of each document 7% of paper documents get lost completely and 4% get misfiled

An average of U.S. $1,400 in labor is spent recreating a lost AutoCAD drawing.

Glenn Seehausen will present the critical components that must be addressed to implement a quality Drawing/Document Management solution in the Campus Facilities environment. Real customer examples will be utilized to communicate the critical aspects of a successful implementation.

This webinar will ask and answer the following questions:

Since the quality of metadata primarily determines the user s perception of the solution, how is quality data achieved?

How does Document management relate to other systems, like CAFM, CMMS, and Project Management systems?

Why does a point forward strategy works best, BEFORE tackling the archives?

Why is Document security is critical (it is for more reasons than you might suspect)?

What happens if the workflow does not must match the business process?

Glenn Seehausen is the founder and CEO of ACAD-Plus, Inc., a firm specializing in Campus Facilities Document Management and Computer Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) solutions since 1986. Under his direction, ACAD-Plus has designed and implemented Document Management solutions to help his customers manage millions of CAD drawings and models, scanned images, photos, and related documents. He is a regular speaker at the CFTA conferences, presenting at his first conference in 1999.

Making the Most of Indirect Cost Recovery

Presented by Roy Davey Vice President OFMS, Inc.  dba  INSITE

One of the most critical efforts your institution accomplishes is recovering the indirect costs it incurs by supporting Sponsored Research.  Your contribution to this effort is a keystone to the successful generation of additional revenue for the university.  Your space inventory is an essential source in determining the recoverable amount, insuring compliance to related Federal Regulations, defending periodic Agency audits, and maximizing the recoverable funds while keeping your institution competitive with others for obtaining new research grants.

What do you need to know, and do, to support this effort?

This webinar will provide you with important information:

  • Basic concepts of Indirect Cost Recovery
  • What can be recovered, and what cannot
  • How your space information contributes to the effort, supports regulatory compliance, and assists in the audit defense / ICR Rate negotiation
  • The ROI for your efforts – real money!
  • What you can do to contribute
